Biopolymers can be developed from non-fossil, bio-based feedstocks, resulting in bio-based compounds with unique chemical functionality. As a result, it may be possible to replace fossil polymers with bio-based alternatives that demonstrate superior performance. The need to develop bio-based materials, given the environmental impact of global plastics pollution and anthropogenic climate change, is critical. This article outlines the development of performance-advantaged, bio-based polymers, with a focus on readily available monomers from bio-based feedstocks. Finally, the article highlights guiding principles and challenges to aid progress in the development of biopolymers.
